The Difference Between Full-grain Leather and Top-grain Leather
Quality; Full-grain leather is the highest quality grade of leather money can buy. It includes all the natural grain and is much more difficult to work with. This is the reflection in the cost. Top grain leather is thinner and more workable for the manufacture.
Durability; The natural surface of full grain leather is unique. It is extremely strong and durable as the natural grain contains the strongest fibers in the hide. Top grain leather is imprinted with a imitation grain to give it a more uniform look. By sanding off the natural grain, they’ve sanded off the strongest fibers in the hide.
Aging; As a full grain leather ages, rather than wear out, it burnishes and beautifies, developing unique character that cannot be easily duplicated. The more you use it the better it looks and feels. The difference in top grain leather is a finish coat applied that provides protection against stains. However, the refinishing process also prevents the leather from developing a natural patina over time.
The Different Types of Leathers. Full-grain leather is the highest grade of leather.
Full-grain refers to the untouched top layer of the leather hide. The hair on the surface is removed, but the surface remains intact, with no flaws, marks or scratches.
Top-grain is a leather surface that has been sanded to smoothen the hide. The uppermost layer requires some form of treatment to remove imperfections.
